We kicked off our annual Prairie Dog Run festivities on Thursday evening at Orlando’s, where a handful of WTRC members enjoyed each other’s company and loaded up on pasta! I hope this will become a regular event before each race. It was nice to visit with familiar members and meet some new ones as well!
On Saturday, February 14th, 2015, 223 runners shared the love and kicked off their Valentine’s Day morning with a Prairie Dog Town Run. We were fortunate enough to have absolutely beautiful weather, perfect for record- breaking (and quite a few were broken)! Congratulations to all the finishers!
102 runners finished the 2-mile event. Fourteen year-old Ret Taylor was the first to cross the finish line in 12:00! The first female finisher was Carina Velasquez (age 13), finishing in 13:47! Carina smashed the 13-15 age group record by almost a minute. Way to go young finishers! Speaking of broken records, Nathan Paden set a new Clydesdale record of 13:41, breaking the 13:56 time set by Stephen Seitz in 2014. Nice work Nathan!
In the 4-mile race, there were 121 finishers, led by Gilbert Limo (age 29) whose time was a swift 23:06. The first place female went to Irene Kimaiyo (age 33) with a time of 25:39. Two more records were broken in the 4-mile. Michaela Jansen’s time of 28:49 was fast enough to earn her the title of the first ever woman to break one of Marjory Stewart’s age group records. Fantastic Job Michaela! And finally, runners always strive to be better, faster, and stronger and Leesa Price certainly fits that description. She broke her age group record that she set in 2013! Leesa shaved a good 20 seconds off of her 34:50 and set the new record at 33:50.
We always appreciate the use of the Bayer Museum of Agriculture’s facility. Also, many thanks to the Lubbock Police and Volunteer Fire Dept./EMS who graciously give us their time on a Saturday morning!
Our rockin’ volunteer personnel included: Megan Taylor, David Lacy, Jamie Mendoza, Reagan Mendoza, Brenna Mendoza, Frank Mendoza, Ron Appling, Artie Corelis, Suzan Caudle, David Higgins, Ian Scott-Fleming Tony Aleman, Tommy Johnson, Amanda Boston, Wendy Anderson, James Bone, Jim Deaver, Randy Holloway, George Jury, PJ Sullivan, Hortensia Deaver and Terry Dalton. You all made my first year as race director a smooth and enjoyable one. Looking forward to next year!
